Is Your Generator Ready for the Storm? A Houston Homeowner's Pre-Storm Checklist 2026

Storm Season Is Here — Is Your Generator Ready?

If you live in the Houston area, you already know the drill: tropical weather forms in the Gulf, and within days it can turn into wind, rain, and — for thousands of homes — a power outage. With a tropical system currently being tracked toward the Texas coast, now is the time to confirm your generator will actually do its job when you need it most.

The good news: if you already have a generator, getting "storm-ready" takes about five minutes. Here's exactly what to check.

1. Check the Indicator Light

Every Generac, Briggs & Stratton, or Champion generator has a status light on the side of the unit. Green means it's in standby mode and ready to activate automatically during an outage. Yellow/amber or red means the unit is flagging a warning that needs attention before the storm arrives — not during it.

2. Confirm Your Generator Is Completing Its Exercise Cycle

Most standby generators automatically run a short self-test every week to keep the engine lubricated and confirm the battery is healthy. If that cycle is running on schedule and the light is green, you're generally covered.

3. Not Sure? Run a Simple Storm Simulation Test

Turn off the main breaker at your transfer switch, let the generator run about 15 minutes, then turn the breaker back on and confirm the light returns to green. If it doesn't start, doesn't reach full power, or the light isn't green afterward, get it looked at before the storm — not after.

4. Check When Your Generator Was Last Serviced

Annual maintenance — fresh oil, a clean air filter, a battery check, a full diagnostic — is the single biggest factor in whether a generator starts on demand. If it's been more than a year since your last service or your maintenance contract has lapsed, that's worth fixing now just text us at 346-888-9393 and we'll get you scheduled.
