The good news: if you already have a generator, getting "storm-ready" takes about five minutes. Here's exactly what to check.

1. Check the Indicator Light

Every Generac, Briggs & Stratton, or Champion generator has a status light on the side of the unit. Green means it's in standby mode and ready to activate automatically during an outage. Yellow/amber or red means the unit is flagging a warning that needs attention before the storm arrives — not during it.

2. Confirm Your Generator Is Completing Its Exercise Cycle

Most standby generators automatically run a short self-test every week to keep the engine lubricated and confirm the battery is healthy. If that cycle is running on schedule and the light is green, you're generally covered.

3. Not Sure? Run a Simple Storm Simulation Test

After Hurricane Beryl knocked out power to over 2.7 million Houston-area customers in 2024 — with some neighborhoods waiting more than two weeks for restoration — the question every generator owner was asking was simple: how long can this thing actually run?

The answer depends on three things: your fuel source, your home's power load, and how well the unit is maintained. Here's the real breakdown, specific to how most Houston homes are set up.

Natural Gas: The Advantage for Houston Homeowners

Most homes in the Houston metro area are connected to natural gas service — and that's a significant advantage when it comes to generator runtime.

A whole-home standby generator connected to your natural gas line can run indefinitely, as long as the gas utility maintains service and pressure. There's no tank to empty, no delivery truck to schedule, and no running out of fuel on day 5 of an extended outage.

Here's something most people don't know: during major hurricanes and storms, Houston's underground natural gas infrastructure has historically remained operational even when the electrical grid was completely down. During Hurricane Katrina, natural gas service remained active across large parts of affected areas even as the power grid was destroyed. The gas distribution system is underground and largely protected from wind and storm damage — which is exactly why standby generators on natural gas are the gold standard for Houston homes.

Practical limit on natural gas: The limiting factor isn't fuel — it's oil. Most manufacturers recommend an oil change every 150 to 200 hours of continuous operation. Running 24 hours a day, that means your first oil change is due around day 6 to 8. With proper maintenance, a natural gas generator can run for weeks or even months during a catastrophic outage.

Propane: Runtime Depends on Your Tank Size

If your home uses propane instead of natural gas (common in newer developments and rural areas outside the metro), runtime is determined by how much fuel you have stored on-site.

Keep in mind these are estimates at moderate load. On a mild day with lower AC demand, your generator runs below 50% load and fuel lasts longer. On a hot Houston summer day with multiple AC units running, consumption goes up.

Critical for propane users: Top off your tank before hurricane season starts — ideally in May or early June. Propane suppliers get slammed with refill requests once a storm enters the forecast, and delivery trucks may not be able to reach your home if roads are flooded. Never let your tank drop below 30% during storm season.


What Actually Limits Your Generator's Runtime


Oil — The Real Limiting Factor

Whether you're on natural gas or propane, the practical limit on continuous runtime is oil maintenance. Most residential standby generators require:

  • Oil check every 24 hours during extended continuous operation

  • Full oil change every 150–200 hours of runtime (roughly days 6–8 of continuous use)

Skipping oil changes during a prolonged outage risks engine damage that can shorten the life of your generator significantly. If you're planning to run through a multi-week outage, make sure you have extra oil on hand before storm season.

Air-Cooled vs. Liquid-Cooled Engines

Most residential standby generators (10–26kW Generac and Briggs & Stratton units) use air-cooled engines. These are designed to run continuously for around 500 hours before requiring a major service interval. For context, that's about 21 days of non-stop operation.

Larger liquid-cooled generators (typically commercial or large estate applications) can run 7–10 days continuously and are better suited to extremely prolonged outages, but they're also significantly more expensive and larger.

For the vast majority of Houston homes, an air-cooled 14–22kW standby generator on natural gas is more than capable of handling even a two-week outage comfortably.


How Much Power Does Your Home Actually Use During an Outage?


This is the question most homeowners don't think to ask — and it matters for runtime estimates.

Most homes don't run at 100% of their generator's rated capacity during an outage. Typical Houston home during an extended summer outage:

Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30 along the Gulf Coast — and Houston sits right in the path. Hurricane Beryl gave Houstonians barely 48 hours of warning before knocking out power for more than 2.7 million customers. A serious storm doesn't always give you days of notice.

If you already own a standby generator, the worst time to discover a problem with it is during an actual outage. Here's the complete checklist to make sure yours is ready before storm season ramps up — plus what to do if you don't have one yet.

If You Already Have a Generator: The Pre-Season Checklist

1. Schedule Your Annual Maintenance Service

This is the single most important step, and it's the one most homeowners skip. A proper pre-season service should include:

  • Oil and filter change — especially important if your unit hasn't run since last season

  • Spark plug inspection/replacement

  • Battery testing — heat is the number one killer of generator batteries in Houston, and a weak battery means your generator may not start when you need it most

  • Full load bank test — this simulates a total power outage to confirm your generator can actually handle your home's full electrical demand, not just turn on

Standby generators run a brief automatic self-test weekly, but that's not the same as a full load test. A unit can pass its self-test and still fail under real demand.

2. Verify Your Fuel Source Is Ready

If you're on natural gas, this is largely automatic — Houston's underground gas infrastructure is one of the most reliable utilities during a hurricane, unlike electricity and gasoline supply, which are frequently disrupted.

If you're on propane, confirm your tank level now, before the season ramps up. Propane suppliers get slammed with refill requests once a storm enters the forecast, and trucks may not be able to reach your home if roads are flooded or blocked.

3. Check the Physical Installation Area

  • Clear any debris, overgrown vegetation, or stored items around the generator enclosure

  • Confirm the area has good drainage — Houston's clay soil and heavy rainfall can pool water around the unit if drainage wasn't properly addressed during installation

  • Inspect the concrete pad for cracks or shifting

4. Test the Automatic Transfer Switch

The transfer switch is what detects a power loss and switches your home to generator power automatically, usually within seconds. If you haven't tested it recently, this is the time. Your installer or maintenance provider can verify it's functioning correctly during your annual service visit.

5. Confirm Your Monitoring App Is Connected

If your generator has app-based remote monitoring (most Generac and Briggs & Stratton models do), make sure it's connected and you're receiving alerts. This lets you know about a maintenance issue before a storm — not after the power goes out and you discover the generator won't start.

During an Extended Outage: What to Know

Standby generators are designed to run for days or even weeks continuously, but a few things matter during a prolonged outage:

  • Check oil levels every 24-48 hours during multi-day continuous operation

  • Never run a portable generator indoors, in a garage, or near windows or doors — carbon monoxide poisoning is a serious and recurring risk after every major hurricane. This applies to portable units; properly installed whole-home standby generators are designed to vent safely outdoors, which is one of the major safety advantages of a permanent installation over a portable unit.

  • Make sure carbon monoxide detectors inside your home have fresh batteries before the season starts

If You Don't Have a Generator Yet: Timing Matters

This is the part that catches a lot of Houston homeowners off guard. The installation timeline — from signed contract to fully operational system — typically runs 4 to 8 weeks, factoring in permitting, scheduling, and inspection.

That means if you wait until a storm is named and tracking toward the Gulf, it's already too late to have a generator installed before it arrives. Heat compounds the danger of a power outage. In Houston, losing power during a summer hurricane isn't just inconvenient — without air conditioning, indoor temperatures can become dangerous within hours, especially for elderly residents, young children, or anyone with medical conditions.

Food spoilage adds up fast. A multi-day outage during summer heat means a full refrigerator and freezer of food loss — often $300-$600 or more — on top of the inconvenience.

Medical equipment dependency. If anyone in your household relies on powered medical equipment (CPAP machines, oxygen concentrators, refrigerated medications), a generator isn't a convenience — it's a safety requirement.
