If you've been thinking about installing a whole-home standby generator in Houston, the first question on your mind is probably: how much is this going to cost me?
We install generators across the Greater Houston area every week — from Katy and Cypress to The Woodlands and Sugar Land — and we hear this question on every single consultation call. So here's a straight answer, based on real jobs we've completed in this market.
What Houston Homeowners Typically Pay
For a whole-home standby generator installed in the Houston area in 2026, expect to pay between $7,000 and $20,000 total, depending on your home size and setup. Here's a realistic breakdown by home size:
Home Size | Generator Size | Typical Total Cost (Installed) |
Small (under 1,500 sq ft) | 10–14 kW | $7,000 – $12,000 |
Medium (1,500–2,500 sq ft) | 16–20 kW | $12,000 – $16,000 |
Large (2,500–4,000 sq ft) | 22–26 kW | $15,000 – $20,000 |
Large with multiple AC units | 26 kW+ | $18,000 – $25,000+ |
These are all-in numbers — generator unit, automatic transfer switch, concrete pad, permits, labor, and startup testing included.
What Makes Up the Total Cost
1. The Generator Unit Itself
The generator unit is typically the biggest single cost. Generac and Briggs & Stratton — the two brands we install — range from around $3,500 for a 10 kW unit up to $8,000–$12,000 for larger 22–26 kW systems.
As authorized dealers for both brands, we can tell you that pricing varies by model and availability. The most popular choice for a mid-size Houston home (think 2,000–2,500 sq ft with a 4-ton AC) is a 22 kW Generac Guardian, which typically runs $12,000–$14,000 installed.
2. Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS)
The ATS is the device that detects a power outage and switches your home from grid power to generator power — automatically, within seconds. This is non-negotiable for a standby generator. Expect to pay $900–$1,500 for the transfer switch, usually included in the total installation quote.
3. Concrete Pad
Houston's clay soil requires a solid concrete pad or alternative base for the generator. This is required by code and by the manufacturer. Budget $200–$500 for the pad, depending on size and site conditions.
4. Permits
Houston and surrounding municipalities (Harris County, Montgomery County, Fort Bend County) require electrical permits for standby generator installation. Some areas also require a gas permit. Permits typically run $400–$1,400 total, and your installer should handle pulling them for you.
5. Labor and Installation
Professional installation labor in Houston ranges from $3,000 to $5,000, depending on the complexity of the job — distance from your electrical panel to the generator location, existing gas line setup, and whether any electrical upgrades are needed.
Houston-Specific Factors That Affect Your Cost
Unlike other parts of the country, Houston has a few local conditions that affect your installation:
Clay soil and drainage. Our soil shifts and retains water. The concrete pad requirements are stricter here, and some installations require additional site prep to ensure proper drainage around the unit.
Hurricane prep demand. Every spring before hurricane season, our install schedule fills up fast. If you want to be protected for the June–November storm season, the time to schedule is now — not after a named storm is in the Gulf.
Natural gas availability. Most Houston-area homes have natural gas service, which is the preferred fuel for standby generators. No refueling needed, unlimited runtime during extended outages. Homes in newer developments or rural areas may need propane instead, which adds a propane tank to your cost.
HOA requirements. If you live in a community in The Woodlands, Katy, or Sugar Land, your HOA may have aesthetic requirements for generator placement and screening. We're familiar with local HOA guidelines and can advise you before the install.
Generac vs. Briggs & Stratton: Which Brand Should You Choose?
We're authorized dealers and certified installers for both, so we're not trying to push one over the other. Here's the honest comparison:
Generac is the most recognized brand in the U.S. residential generator market. Parts are widely available, their mobile app monitoring is excellent, and resale buyers in Houston increasingly recognize the Generac name as a quality signal. The Guardian series (10–26 kW) is our most-installed product line.
Briggs & Stratton (now under the Simplicity brand) uses a commercial Vanguard engine built in the USA. If you want a quieter unit with excellent build quality and the same warranty coverage, it's a strong alternative — and in some cases, better suited for larger homes or propane setups.
The right choice often comes down to your specific load requirements and budget. We'll help you figure that out during your free in-home consultation.
What About Financing?
A generator is a significant investment, but most of our Houston customers don't pay for it all upfront. We offer two financing paths:
Synchrony Financial — most homeowners qualify in minutes, with flexible payment terms
NEIF (National Energy Improvement Fund) — another low-barrier option with competitive rates
As low as $163/month for a qualified buyer. Ask us about current offers when you call.
Does a Generator Add Value to Your Home?
Yes — and in Houston, significantly. Real estate professionals in the area estimate that a whole-home standby generator adds $5,000 to $10,000 to appraised value, and post-2021 (after Winter Storm Uri), Houston buyers increasingly expect backup power as a standard feature in higher-end homes.
For neighborhoods like The Woodlands, Katy, Cypress, and Sugar Land, a generator is becoming less of a luxury and more of a checkbox buyers look for.
How Long Does Installation Take?
The physical installation itself takes one to two days. The longer part is permitting, which can take two to six weeks depending on the city. Total timeline from signing a contract to a live, running system is typically three to eight weeks.
This is exactly why we recommend not waiting until a storm is on the radar. Book your free consultation now and be ready before hurricane season.
Ready to Get a Real Quote for Your Houston Home?
Every home is different. The only way to give you an accurate number is to come out and do a proper load calculation — look at your electrical panel, your square footage, your AC tonnage, and your must-have appliances during an outage.
That consultation is completely free, and there's no pressure to buy.
